Preventable Condition

Cavities & Tooth Decay

Understanding prevention, detection, and treatment

A cavity is a permanently damaged area in a tooth where decay has created a hole in the enamel. Cavities are among the most common dental conditions — and among the most preventable. When caught early, a cavity can be treated with a simple dental filling.

How Decay Happens

The Cavity Development Process

Tooth decay begins when bacteria in the mouth produce acids that erode the tooth's enamel. These bacteria feed on sugars and starches from food and drink, forming a sticky film called plaque.

When plaque is not removed through regular brushing and flossing, the acid exposure continues — weakening the enamel until a cavity forms. Factors that increase risk include frequent snacking on sugary or acidic foods, inconsistent brushing and flossing, dry mouth, receding gums, and deteriorated dental work.

What to Watch For

Signs of Tooth Decay

Often No Symptoms

Early cavities often produce no symptoms — which is why regular dental exams are essential for catching decay before it progresses. Your dentist can detect cavities using visual examination, digital imaging, and other diagnostic tools. This integrated approach reflects Dr. Singh's 40+ years of implant expertise. We focus on long-term success and patient satisfaction with every procedure.

Developing Symptoms

As a cavity deepens, you may experience sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods; visible discoloration or dark spots on the tooth surface; mild to moderate toothache; or pain when biting down. These symptoms indicate the decay is progressing and treatment is needed. This integrated approach reflects Dr. Singh's 40+ years of implant expertise. We focus on long-term success and patient satisfaction with every procedure.

Cavity Treatment & Prevention

Treatment depends on how far decay has progressed. A small cavity is treated with a filling — the decayed material is removed and the tooth is restored with composite resin or another restorative material. A larger cavity that has compromised the tooth's structural integrity may require a crown. If decay has reached the nerve, root canal therapy may be necessary to save the tooth.

Early-stage cavities are simple and inexpensive to treat with fillings. Left untreated, decay progresses deeper — eventually reaching the nerve and requiring root canal therapy or extraction. Early detection preserves more natural tooth structure and avoids more complex treatment.

The most effective prevention is consistent oral hygiene — brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and maintaining regular dental exams and professional cleanings. Fluoride treatments and dental sealants provide additional protection, particularly for children and patients at higher risk.

Diet significantly impacts cavity risk. Frequent consumption of sugary or acidic foods and drinks feeds the bacteria that produce cavity-causing acids. Limiting snacking, choosing water over sugary beverages, and eating cavity-fighting foods (cheese, nuts, vegetables) can reduce your risk.

A filled tooth is functional but not quite as strong as the original tooth. The filling material bonds to the tooth but cannot fully replicate the strength of natural tooth structure. Proper care and regular monitoring help ensure the filling's longevity.

Most patients benefit from dental exams and cleanings twice per year — every six months. Patients with a history of cavities or other risk factors may need more frequent visits. Your dentist will recommend the right schedule for your situation.

Prevention Focus

Vitality's Approach to Cavity Prevention

Vitality prioritizes early detection and conservative treatment — addressing decay while it is small, preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible, and using digital imaging to monitor areas of concern over time.

Regular exams catch problems before they become serious. Professional cleanings remove buildup that brushing and flossing alone cannot address. Patient education empowers you to make choices that reduce your risk.
