Sleep Dentistry With a Dental Anesthesiologist

IV Sedation — Sleep Through Your Procedure

Administered by one of our dental anaesthetists, a dental anesthesiologist on staff at Vitality.

If dental fear has kept you from the care you need — for months, for years — you are not the only one. IV sedation is the deepest level of sedation we offer in-office. You sleep through the treatment. You wake up when it is over. Most patients remember nothing.

What Is IV Sedation?

The deepest sedation available outside a hospital

IV sedation delivers medication directly into your bloodstream through a small line placed in your arm or hand. The effects begin within seconds. You enter a state of deep relaxation in which you are unaware of the procedure and unlikely to form any memory of it.

This is not general anesthesia — you breathe independently throughout. But the depth of sedation is significant: most patients experience it as sleep. The clinical term is deep conscious sedation.

The key advantage of IV sedation is precision. Because medication enters the bloodstream directly, our dental anaesthetist can adjust the depth of sedation in real time — increasing it if you show signs of awareness, decreasing it as the procedure nears completion. Control is continuous.

Why It Matters

A dental anesthesiologist — not a dentist managing sedation

In most dental practices that offer IV sedation, the treating dentist also manages the sedation. The same clinician performing your root canal or implant placement is simultaneously monitoring your breathing, heart rate, and sedation depth. Their attention is divided.

Our dental anaesthetists are dental anesthesiologists — medical doctors who completed specialty residency training in anesthesiology. These are the same credentials required to provide anesthesia in a hospital operating room. During your procedure, our dental anaesthetist does not perform any dental treatment. Their sole focus is your sedation and your vital signs.

They monitor oxygen saturation, heart rate, blood pressure, and cardiac rhythm continuously. They adjust sedation depth based on what they observe in real time. The treating dentist focuses entirely on the clinical work. This separation of roles is not standard in dental practice — most offices that offer IV sedation bring in an outside provider on a limited schedule. At Vitality, our dental anaesthetists are permanent members of the clinical team.

The Patient Experience

What to expect — step by step

Pre-Operative Assessment

You complete a medical history review with our dental anaesthetist or a member of the team. Current medications, health conditions, allergies, and any previous reactions to sedation are assessed.

This information determines the sedation protocol and monitoring approach. In some cases, this is a separate appointment before the procedure day.

Your Procedure

You arrive at the practice and are settled into the treatment room. Hospital-grade monitoring equipment is connected. Our dental anaesthetist establishes the IV line — a brief pinch in the arm or hand.

Medication takes effect within seconds. A deep sense of calm, then sleep. Our dental anaesthetist monitors your vitals continuously while the treating dentist works.

Recovery & Discharge

You are monitored during recovery until you are alert, oriented, and stable. A companion must be present to drive you home. Written post-operative instructions are provided.

Rest for the remainder of the day. Most patients feel fully normal by the next morning. The team follows up to ensure recovery is progressing as expected.

Who Benefits

When lighter sedation is not enough

IV sedation is appropriate for patients whose dental phobia is severe enough that lighter options are insufficient — patients who have avoided care for years, patients whose anxiety produces genuine dread rather than unease.

It is indicated for complex or lengthy procedures: full-arch implant placement, multiple surgical extractions, bone grafting, and full-mouth reconstruction.

Patients who have had traumatic dental experiences find that IV sedation breaks the cycle — the new experience overwrites the old one, because there is no experience to remember. Patients with a severe gag reflex or needle fear also benefit — once the single IV line is placed (a matter of seconds), you are unaware of everything that follows.

Preparation

How to prepare for IV sedation

Fasting is required: no food for eight hours and no clear liquids for two hours before the procedure. Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from the appointment and remain with you for the first few hours at home.

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing with sleeves that roll up easily. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the procedure. Continue taking regular medications unless our dental anaesthetist or the team instructs otherwise.

Plan for the remainder of the day to be free of obligations — no driving, no work, no childcare responsibility, no important decisions for 24 hours.

Common Questions

IV sedation FAQ

No. With IV sedation, you breathe independently throughout. General anesthesia requires a ventilator. IV sedation is the deepest level of sedation available in a dental office — most patients experience it as sleep and remember nothing — but it is not the same as being fully anesthetized.

No. The IV placement involves a brief pinch, and within seconds the sedation takes effect. Local anesthesia is administered after you are sedated, so you will not feel the injections or any aspect of the procedure. Most patients have no memory of the appointment.

You will be monitored at the practice until alert and stable, then released to your companion. Expect drowsiness for the rest of the day. Most patients feel completely normal by the next morning.

Yes. At Vitality, IV sedation is administered by one of our dental anaesthetists, a dental anesthesiologist with hospital-grade monitoring equipment. Oxygen saturation, blood pressure, heart rate, and cardiac rhythm are tracked continuously. Emergency response equipment is immediately available.

The IV is a single, brief placement — typically in the hand or inner arm. Once the sedation takes effect (seconds), you are unaware of everything that follows. Many of our needle-phobic patients say the IV placement was far less significant than they anticipated.
