A general practice that does its own complex work

We have looked after families on Highway 7 East since 1985. What that has come to mean in practice is a general dental office that also handles the work most general offices send somewhere else — implants, orthodontics, oral surgery, sedation — with a dental laboratory in the same building.

The reason that matters to you is not the equipment. It is that a complicated plan does not get handed between offices that never speak to each other. The person placing an implant and the technician making the tooth that goes on it are down the corridor from one another, and the person who will see you for a cleaning in six months has the same record open.

Who does what

Ontario requires us to say whether a dentist is registered as a general practitioner or as a specialist, and it is useful to know anyway:

• Dr. Raj Singh is a general dentist who provides implant services, and has been placing implants for 31+ years.
• Dr. Miranda Wang and Dr. Ray Han are general dentists.
• Dr. Julien Kim is a registered specialist in orthodontics. All braces and clear aligner treatment is his.
• Dr. Claudio Tocchio is a registered specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery, and does the complex extractions and the sinus lift surgery.
• Dr. Stephen Ing is a dental anaesthesiologist and gives the sedation, from nitrous oxide through to IV.

What a first visit involves

We examine your teeth and gums, take any radiographs that are clinically needed — and only those — and then talk through what your options are and what each one involves. If something needs doing, you get the cost of it in writing before it starts, as a full figure rather than a starting one. We submit insurance claims electronically and we accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan. More on insurance and financing.

The everyday work most people come in for

Implants and full-arch reconstruction get the attention, but the bulk of what happens here on any given day is ordinary, and it is the part that decides whether the complicated work is ever needed.

Preventive care

• Exams, cleanings and periodontal maintenance — the routine appointment, and the deeper version of it for anyone who has had gum disease. How often you need to come in depends on your risk rather than on the calendar, and we set the interval at each exam.
• Oral cancer screening — a look at the soft tissues — tongue, floor of mouth, throat — at every examination, not as a separate appointment.
• Night guards and sport guards — a custom-moulded appliance that takes the load off teeth from night-time clenching, and a separate one that absorbs impact in contact sport. Both are fitted from a scan of your own teeth.
• Looking after teeth at home — what actually works between appointments, including why interdental brushes suit most adults better than floss.

Gum care

• Periodontal treatment — the active treatment when gum disease is diagnosed — scaling and root planing below the gum line, done in sections under local anaesthetic where the pockets are deep.
• Periodontal maintenance — the ongoing care that follows gum treatment, usually every three months. A different appointment from a routine cleaning: the gums are charted each visit and the cleaning reaches into the pockets that remain.
• Gum grafting — covering root surfaces that recession has exposed, where sensitivity or continued loss makes it worth doing.
• Laser dentistry — used in some periodontal and soft-tissue procedures as an alternative to a blade.

Restoring teeth

• Tooth-coloured fillings — composite resin restorations, bonded to the tooth and shaded to match it. The everyday repair for decay and for small fractures.
• Composite bonding — the same material used cosmetically — closing a small gap, rebuilding a chipped edge, evening out a worn one.
• Crowns, including same-day — a full cover for a tooth too broken or too heavily filled to hold a filling. Designed and milled here, so many are fitted in one visit — see same-day crowns.
• Bridges — replacing a missing tooth using the teeth on either side, which is often the better answer when those teeth already need crowns.
• Root canal treatment — cleaning and sealing the inside of a tooth whose nerve has died or become infected, so the tooth itself can be kept.
• Dentures and partial dentures — removable replacements for several teeth or a whole arch, and the implant-supported versions for anyone whose lower denture will not stay put.
• Extractions — when a tooth cannot be kept — planned together with whatever replaces it, rather than as a separate decision.
